How to Choose the Right Adult Care Home for Your Loved One

By White Orchid ·

Choosing where a parent or grandparent will live is one of the most emotional decisions a family makes. The good news: with the right questions, you can tell a great deal about a home in a single visit.

Start with the essentials

  • Licensing. Ask whether the home is licensed by the state (in Ohio, the Ohio Department of Health). A current license means the facility has passed inspection.
  • Staffing ratio. Smaller homes with 3–5 residents can offer far more personal attention than large facilities. Ask how many caregivers are present, day and night.
  • Level of care. Make sure the home can meet your loved one’s specific needs — mobility support, medication management, memory care, or assistance with daily living.

Look closely during your visit

A tour tells you what a brochure can’t. Notice:

  • Are residents clean, comfortable, and engaged?
  • Do caregivers speak to residents warmly and by name?
  • Is the home bright, calm, and clean — or institutional and rushed?
  • Are meals fresh and shared at a table?

Ask about daily life

  • What does a typical day look like?
  • Are there activities, time outdoors, and visits from family encouraged?
  • How are concerns and emergencies handled?

Trust how it feels

After the practical questions are answered, pay attention to your instincts. The best homes feel like homes — warm, unhurried, and personal. That feeling of peace, knowing your loved one is safe and genuinely cared for, is what matters most.

If you’d like to see what that feels like in person, we’d be glad to welcome you for a visit.
